Biography of Farida Tarana

Born in Herat, western Afghanistan, Farida Tarana grew up in Iran, where her family fled during the war in Afghanistan.

In 2004, Farida returned to Afghanistan and worked for the UNWFP (United Nations Women & Empowerment) office in Herat.

In 2006, Farida took part in the casting show Afghan Star on the Afghan TV channel “Tolo TV” and came 8th in 2007.

As the best-placed female participant, she quickly became famous in her home
country.

In 2008, she achieved the second best result in the provincial elections in Kabul, which were held at the same time as the presidential elections, and won a seat as a member of parliament.

During this time, Farida Tarana also founded the ”Ayene Zendegi” Institute, which worked for the education of women.

For security reasons, Farida left Afghanistan in 2011 and has since lived in the
Netherlands from where she continues to pursue her musical activities.
